  • another baby update

Days before turning 6months old: Brienna learnt to play peek a boo.
By 7 months she can do it herself with a blanket/cloth

She has been babbling since 6 months plus.
    Now at 7 1/2 months she babbles pa-pa!, pa-pa-pa!
This makes Weng run to her thinking she has called him to come.
The vocal resemblance to Abi's 'Papa' call is striking.

She giggles a lot more now at things that amuse her.
Abi is a great source of entertainment for this little 7 month old.
The best time for laughter and giggles is just after getting up from a nap, or right after a feed.
She can be in a giggling mood for up to 5 minutes, sometimes 10.
It's really nice to see the sisters interacting so positively with each other in this way.

Another thing is, around 7 months, she now cries for me if I leave the room.
    I cannot leave her sight!
But if I stay within her sight while doing my own thing cooking, cleaning etc, she would stare and stare at me until I make eye contact, then she would giggle (like playing peek a boo).

She learnt to sit up properly on her own towards the end of May, so around 7 1/2 months.
Before then she would need to be propped up on a seat, or support in the small of her back, otherwise she would arch backwards and fall back.
Very flexible and strong back she had, just not still enough to sit up on her own.
    But now she can :)

    And Abi.
She learnt to string words together to make simple sentences around late April (2 yr 5 months).
By mid May she was forming more complete sentences using conjunctions etc.
now she's really talking in full sentences.

I cut her fringe a few days ago, she now has the china doll hairstyle I had when I was little.
It was a bit strange looking at her, it was like looking at the mirror at my old childhood self.

    Photos are coming.
I have to get the hang of my SLR software, or maybe I should just download Irfanview or something.
    Or something else.
I have a Mac, what simple photo software would you recommend?

  • Baby notes

Brienna turned 6 months old last week.

No teeth yet, though she is showing signs of teething related ailments like unexplainable crankiness (lasts only a few minutes), drooling and gumming her fingers.

She could flop from tummy to back around 4-5 months, and she loves moving her body while lying on her back.
She could turn from back to tummy if she could move her hips.
She doesn't like being on her tummy for too long though.

The week before turning six months old, Brienna gained a keen awareness of the things that happen around her.

She can focus and concentrate on objects that look interesting to her.
with her strong back, she can twist and turn in her sitting position to reach out for things, grab them and pull them close for closer examination.
Objects start going into her mouth nowadays for a taste.

I haven't started her on solids yet as we have a few busy weeks coming up.
But when I do, it'll only be solids for tasting, with a longterm weaning age around one.

Will note down other parenting thoughts another day.

  • Letting go?

Today Brienna learnt how to let go.
    Let the 'drop game' begin!
I'm glad I have a toddler who is happy to pick up whatever Brienna drops to the ground by letting go.

    On a totally unrelated note:

The last few days has been a flurry of mainly brain activity.
I have been busy thinking up new ideas and new ways of doing what I realise I have a passion for: modern cloth nappies.

Don't get me wrong, I love demonstrating for Baby Blossom in Bunbury.
It's just that I've realised a few things about the local community here:

    - Being regional, not that many people I know get on the Internet, except in the past two years or so. Those that do and have babies can buy whatever nappy they want on the Net, really. No need to go through me!

    - There are far more people who haven't heard of modern cloth nappies simply because they don't have internet access.

    - Those who have heard of them often ask whether they can buy it at the local shop!

    - Saving money is the key, convenience is another matter.

    - Not many people like to pick up the brochures to find out more about what I do.

    - Those who do often have to wait a while for the nappies to come from over east. I;ve resorted to giving subsidised express post otherwise the wait is really long.

So putting it all together, I have a dream birthed out of all the above needs.
The more I think of it, the more I think it might just be possible.

It's been a week and a bit now, and reality has set in.

Do I let go of the dream? Or do I stick with it for the long haul?

Funnily enough, a few related opportunities have come up, and I'd like to explore them further.
Let's see where this runs, and I'll run with it.

  • 25 Random Things About Me
    Tag... you're it!

RULES: Once you've been tagged, you are supposed to write a note with 25 random things, facts, habits, or goals about you. At the end, choose 25 people to be tagged. You have to tag the person who tagged you. If I tagged you, it's because I want to know more about you.

    1. Between 2000-2005 I have had 20+ housemates, mainly due to frequent moving house, changing housemates (student housing) and staying with families from church during weekends (8-9 families!).

    2. Between 2000-2005 I moved 5 times, from moving rooms within a studen flat, to moving from one student flat to another, to moving across the suburb, to moving across the city, to finally moving cities to Bunbury.

    3. I can't choose fruit as well as my hubby, he manages to pick the sweet ones most of the time.

    4. I have 5 brothers and 1 sister.

    5. My family is the only one I know with wacky age gaps. For example, the gap between my eldest bro and youngest sister is 32 years, between the oldest two of us 11 years, between the youngest two: 10 1/2 years. And there are more examples I haven't mentioned...

    6. My two daughters are so similar (looks, laughs, cries, disposition) that they could be twins, except that they are 2 years apart.

    7. I would love to go to a circus one day with my family.

    8. If I were to visit any English-speaking church that has an Asian majority in Perth, I would probably know at least 5 people in each of those churches, half of which are most likely to have come from KK.

    9. I used modern cloth nappies on my babies, and I knit woollen pants as very effective covers for them.

    10. I sell cloth nappies.

    11. I do bookkeeping for my hubby's surgery as a part-time job from home.

    12. I'm the founder of the Bunbury Freecycle group.

    13. I'm used to welcoming people new to the community and giving them help until they find they own two feet, be it students (at uni), new dentists (in Bunbury) or new Asian people to Bunbury, but this year has been pretty quiet on that front. No new people I have met yet.

    14. I have hardly been sick in the last few years. If I do get sick it is usually happens once or twice a year only.

    15. I have given birth at home once.

    16. When I was home in KK I grew up among boys (siblings and cousins), but when I arrived in Perth I was surrounded by a female majority in student housing, in my Nutrition course and at church.

    17. I tend to write things out really long-winded, becuase I need to get every single detail out in black and white.

    18. I still need to finalisse a design for my backyard.

    19. I'm studying a Cert IV in Small Business Management by distance education that ends on July 2009. I'm halfway through now.

    20. My current favourite kitchen appliance is my electric pressure cooker. Past favourites include my breadmaker (I only use the dough setting), my hand mixer (yummy cakes!) and my hand grinder (Malay/Indian food from scratch...mmmm sambal and curry!)

    21. I need to go to bed now becuase we just drove down from PErth and I'm tired.

    22. Tomorrow will be  a public holiday only in Western Australia (can you tell I'm running out of time/patience?)

    23. Our 2 watering days are THursday and Sunday.

    24. I like to do my groceries on a Friday because it is less busy than Thursdays and Saturdays, yet you can still get a variety of meat on special (unlike Saturdays when choices are limited).

    25. I prefer cooler weather because you can pile on clothing to get warmer, but you can't peel off your skin when it gets too hot.
